Adiantum are found in humus rich woodlands. Grows best in a moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil, and is intolerant of clay conditions. Spreads slowly by shallow rhizomes. Propagate by division in early spring or by spores. Does not have any significant pests or disease.

Native to OntarioAdiantum pedatum provides cover for predator animals: toads, salamanders and small mammals. Specialized aphids Macrosiphum adianti and Papulaphis sleesmani depend on them.
