Growing Tips & Maintenance
- Grows best in a loamy, peaty, well-drained soil, in shade or dappled sunlight. These native plants do not spread quickly. Seeds will germinate in the spring to form a single rounded leaf, and then take three years of growth before the plant is large enough to flower. Best left undisturbed when established. The juvenile seedling can sometimes be mistaken for poison ivy foliage. Foliage goes dormant by mid to late summer. Consider interplanting with fall flower to fill the space: Solidago caesia, Solidago flexicaulis, Aster/Eurybia divaricata.
Note
Additional Notes
- Native to OntarioArisaema triphyllum is dioecious: there are male plants and female plants. And they can change their sex from one year to the next!Prolific producers of berries, mature plants provide food for birds and small mammals. The roots, leaves and berries contain toxic needle-like calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate skin.
