Fruits are frequently eaten raw or used in ice cream or pies, although they can produce nausea in some people. Early Americans made a yellow dye from the pulp of the ripened fruit.Unripe fruits are poisonous, and the seeds contain alkaloids that can induce vomiting.Exclusive larval host for Zebra Swallowtail Butterflies. The flowers emit an odour which attracts flies and beetles, its pollinators. The fruits are enjoyed by a variety of wildlife, large and small.
