Growing Tips & Maintenance

Azalea have a shallow fibrous root system, requiring constant moisture, but dislike standing water. They need protection from the midday sun and a fertile soil with a low pH. May require pH adjustments with acidifying fertilizers or iron sulfate. Maintain a soil pH of 5-5.5 for healthiest plants. To promote flowering for the following season, any pruning should be done soon after blooming to leave enough time for the buds to reset. Protection (burlap wrap) from drying winter winds is recommended in exposed locations.

Foliage is lighter than most girard cultivars. All azaleas are rhododendrons. Evergreen azaleas belong to subgenus Tsutsusi, and deciduous azaleas are classified in the subgenus Pentanthera.
