Clethra grows naturally in wet places, and prefers acidic soil. It tolerates a wide variety of soils and conditions, including shade and salt. Suckering fairly freely, it may need some maintenance. Even in shade, Clethra will flower profusely, ideal for woodland gardens and rain gardens.

Flowering in mid to late summer, when most shrubs are done, this shrub is a great choice for pollinator gardens.
