Growing Tips & Maintenance
- Echinacea pallida thrives in an average to moist, well-drained soil, in full sun to partial shade. They are drought-tolerant, once established, and adaptable to heat and poor soils. Taller cultivars may grow leggy and require support if grown in dense shade. Regular deadheading is recommended to improve appearance, but not necessary to increase bloom time. Direct sun exposure helps develop proper flower pigmentation. Pay special attention to plant depth: crown must be at or slightly above soil level. Freely self-seeds if finished blooms are left on the plant.
Note
Additional Notes
- Native to OntarioLarval host plant for various moths and butterflies, including the Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly. It is an excellent nectar source for many species of bees and butterflies, including the threatened Ottoe Skippers and Regal Frittilaries. The seeds provide food for small birds including goldfinches. The plant also attracts beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps, which help manage other pests. The word "echinacea" comes from the Greek word "echinos" meaning "hedgehog", referring to the flower's spiky central cone.
