Growing Tips & Maintenance
- Grows best in an average to consistently moist, well-drained soil, in full to partial shade. Do not prune to the ground in fall as the leaves nourish the plant during the winter months and provide added winter protection. Slow to establish and does not like to be transplanted once it reaches its maturity.
Note
Additional Notes
- Native to Ontario and most of Eastern North America.Good source of early-season pollen for native bees. To protect their pollen, the flowers close at night, and even on dark days.Leaves are toxic when ingested, and may cause skin irritation.Seed dispersal occurs via a symbiotic relationship with ants.
