Grows best in 100 cm of water or less, but can naturalize in 200 cm of depth or more. Plant rhizomes directly in the muddy bottoms of ponds or leave in containers if desired. It spreads by seed or by rhizomes.

The foliage, including the rhizomes, is consumed by beavers, porcupines and other mammals.
