Polygonum will grow best in a poor, moist soil, in full sun to partial shade, not tolerating wet or winter wet conditions. A hard pruning back to the old wood can be done in the spring and any time throughout the growing season. Trim the new shoots to control the plant's growth habit.

Polygonum auberti has been described as invasive in many areas in North America: anything that can grow 12 feet per year has the capacity! Consider substituting a native vine: Vitis riparia or Clematis virginiana.
