Growing Tips & Maintenance
- A popular shade tree with a strong central leader and good fall colour. This oak is great for landscapes, parks or streets.'Palustris' translates roughly to, 'of the swamp'. Young trees benefit from consistent moisture.Do not prune Oaks during the growing season. Oaks are highly susceptible to Oak Wilt, which is spread by a sap beetle that is attracted to fresh wounds. Prune oaks only during the dormant season in winter after the leaves have fallen. Oak Wilt can kill a mature Oak within one season.
Note
Additional Notes
- Native to Ontario and parts of North America. Larval and foliar host for hundreds of species of moths and butterflies, plus other insects. Pin Oak acorns are small, but contain lots of fat: food for wild turkeys, jays, wild ducks, grouse, and of course, squirrels and chipmunks.
