Growing Tips & Maintenance

  • Saskatoon berries are very hardy although late spring frosts may be problematic. They prefer average moisture in well-drained soils with a pH above 6. They will begin to bear fruit at 2-4yrs of age on old wood in late June. Plants generally will not require pruning until 7-9 years of age and then removing damaged, weak or crossed branches should be performed in early spring before new growth begins. Saskatoon berries are self-pollinating, however, will produce larger and more fruit if another one is present.
